In addition to adopting the lighter touch and palette of his younger Impressionist colleagues, Manet exploits the broad planes of colour and strong diagonals of Japanese prints to give an inimitable shape to this leisure scene. It is believed that Rodolphe Leenhoff, the artist's brother-in-law, posed for the sailor, but the woman's identity is uncertain.
