During the American Civil War, the United States warship Kearsarge became famous after the Confederate raider Alabama sank off the French coast. Manet did not witness the extremely popular event, but he dedicated two paintings to the subject: a scene of the naval battle and this painting, as a result of the visit of the victorious ship anchored near Boulogne.
