Odilon Redon was fascinated in his youth by Darwin's evolutionary biology. This fascination is visible in his floral paintings that convey the curiosity of a naturalist and a creative imagination through the combination of different flowers and leaves in an effervescent mixture, surrounded by fluttering butterflies.
The vase in the painting illustrated by this canvas print, which appears in a number of his flower pictures, was offered to him by the ceramicist Marie Botkin around 1900.
