The painting illustrated in this canvas print was probably inspired by one of two novels as critics speculated. The first novel is Paul and Virginie by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, in which the teenage characters run to take shelter from the storm, using the heroine's coat as an improvised umbrella. The second one is the novel Daphnis and Chloe by the ancient writer Longus.
